Joe,

I would beg to differ on the use of svrmgrl over sqlplus in 8.1.x.
None other than Tom Kyte corrected me on the (non)use of sqlplus in 
running scripts as SYS such as catalog.sql.
For 8.1.6, 8.1.7, you are still recommended to use svrmgrl for running 
scripts as SYS.
