Ruth,
Pl check out dbms_stats package and gather_table_stats procedure in
particular..
Here is an example from my scripts..
execute dbms_stats.gather_table_stats ('DBM','CAMPAIGNS',NULL, NULL,
FALSE,'FOR ALL INDEXED COLUMNS SIZE 150',NULL,'ALL',TRUE,NULL,NULL, NULL);
