I would insist that your boss send you to Oracle training. If they'll pay for training, travel, and your salary while you are in training then that's a good measure of their support. You should also get commitment for annual trips to the IOUG conference. Is your employer willing to support you in your Oracle DBA education? If they are not willing to give this level of commitment then why expend the energy to become self-taught? The answer to that last question is up to you.
