Joe,
Here you go ....
(wow! that rhymes:)

Startup the database (normal). No need to be in other modes.
Off line the tablespace (hope it is not system TS) (alter tablespace blah
offline;).
At os level copy the file to the new destination.

alter database rename file '<old_path/file.name>' to '<new_path/file.name>';

On line the tablespace (alter tablespace blah online;)
Also, do the following...

alter database backup controlfile to trace;

Hold on to the new trace file in UDUMP destination, it has create control
file syntax and the list of ALL current data files (with the new name :)
Once everything is working fine, you can remove the old file...

Now you can backup the database or tablespace in question.... whatever...

Okay, I don't have the manuals with me and can't for the life of me
remember the correct syntax to do this...

Is it:

shutdown database
startup no noumt (or startup mount)
alter tablesapce evisions
rename datafile '/full_path/file_name' to '/full_path/new_name';

I'm on 8.1.6 and this complains saying the database isn't open.

It can't be open to rename a datafile...

Thanks,
Joe
