Please correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't you want to use the following...
 
FOR UPDATE NOWAIT
 
if the row is being updated/locked, you can report that to the user, and re-query the data to ensure they still want to update it.  Otherwise, with just FOR UPDATE, the first update gets overwritten by the second (waiting) update without either user's knowledge.

When you make the select statement at the end add the clause FOR UPDATE
 
SELECT FIELD1, FIELD2 FROM TABLE
     WHERE
FIELD1 = 40
    FOR UPDATE
