David - You have touched on two very large subjects: Tuning SQL Statements and Oracle System Performance Tuning. There are people on this list who have spent years developing skills in this area, and others like me that have spent years not learning nearly enough. To get an overview of the subject, go to the Frequently Asked Question site for this list which appears at the bottom of every message: http://www.orafaq.com. I searched this site for "tuning" and received several papers that cover the most common questions. Once you have exhausted this resource, you could go to http://www.google.com and search for things like "Oracle SQL Tuning" or "Oracle System Tuning". These free on-line resources should get you started and get you past some common problems. If you decide to learn more, there are some really excellent books that will help you learn. Oracle teaches a class on just this topic. Once you have taken the time to understand some of the basics and have some specific questions, write back with some more specific questions. If your site needs help more quickly, ask your boss about bringing a consultant in for a day. An experienced consultant can do a lot in a day to put your site on the right path.
