Indeed. When looking at R = S + W I truly get scared when I see stuff like 400 = 399 + 1. Doesn't leave much room for database work, does it?

paper will miss this. If I recall correctly, one of
it's opening statements is the classic formula:

response time = service time plus wait time.

My own mantra puts in rather less scientific terms:

If you have a performance problem, either your database
is working too hard, or it's not being allowed to work.
