If I recall correctly, the reason I was editing the crontab in the first place was to unschedule whatever it was that was filling up /var. Oops.
And this happened back when I was doubling as the sysadmin, so I didn't really have anyone else to blame. :-) On the other hand, I didn't have to wait for someone else to restore the crontab from the previous night's backup; I just went and restored it myself. Ups and downs to everything, I suppose.
