It lists "basic readable standby database" as a feature of both SE and EE. I
didn't see where it listed as an alternative to this. By readable I assume
it is referring to the fact that in 8i your standby could either be
accepting archive logs or opened as read-only, and that 9i can
simultaneously accept logs and read-only queries.

metalink which says "However, the Standard Edition of Oracle does not
