For those of you using Windows this is a good note to monitor (77627.1) on a regular basis as it is updated frequently with the latest information regarding supported configurations and other valuable information regarding the platform. I believe there is some new information forthcoming in it regarding 8.1.7 and XP.

Creation Date: 25-NOV-1999 Last Revision Date: 22-MAR-2002 ... The following article describes the compatibility of the Oracle Database server products with the Windows 2000 operating system. For information relating to Windows 9.x refer to [NOTE:65995.1], Windows NT refer to [NOTE:45997.1] and Windows XP / .NET refer to [NOTE:161546.1]. ... Windows 2000 Telnet Services Support ==================================== Windows 2000 introduces a new Telnet Service that allows remote users to log on to the operating system and [***] run console programs using the command line, [***] in the same way that they do on UNIX. Oracle does support the use of its database command line utilities such as sqlplus, export, import and sqlldr using this feature, but not its GUI tools. The release notes do not documented that this is supported but Oracle product planning have indicated that this is supported and bugs can be raised if customers encounter problems using this environment. Windows 2000 Terminal Services Support ====================================== The Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Server (Terminal Service) is a Windows component that can be added to the server editions of Windows 2000 from the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in Control Panel. It provides remote graphical user interface (GUI) access to a server's desktop through terminal emulation software, allowing multiple simultaneous client sessions to access and run on the server. With Terminal Services, the terminal emulation software sends keystrokes and mouse movements to the server. The Terminal server does all the data manipulation locally and passes back the display. This approach allows remote control of servers and centralized application management. The terminal emulation software supports the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and can run on two types of client hardware device : - PCs with the Terminal Services Client software installed or the newer TSAC (Terminal Services Advanced Client) which is a Win32-based COM object / control that can be used to run Terminal Services sessions within Microsoft Internet Explorer or other applications. - Windows Powered thin clients which run the Windows Embedded family of operating systems. These componentized operating systems enable device manufacturers to embed the Terminal Server client protocols (RDP), Internet Explorer, terminal emulators and simplified task-oriented user interfaces into cost-effective devices. Oracle has only certified its products for access through PCs with the Terminal Server Client software installed; access to Oracle products through Windows Powered thin clients is not supported. The following section describes which Oracle Database Server versions are supported when accessed from one of these clients. In general the Database Server, Net8 / Net9 Server and client software are certified. Please check the appropriate section below for additional information on unsupported products : +---------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Version | Windows 2000 Server / Advanced Server / Datacentre / MLE | +----------+----------------------------------------------------------+ | 9.0.1.x | Supported | | 8.1.7.x | Supported | | 8.1.6.x | Not Supported | +----------+----------------------------------------------------------+ Windows 2000 can be configured to support Terminal Services in : - Application Server Mode - or Remote Administration Mode Where a release is listed as supported above, it supports both of these modes. For information about support of Windows NT Terminal Server Edition please refer to [NOTE:66397.1]. Unsupported 9.0.1 Oracle Products under Windows 2000 Terminal Services ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation of Oracle9i server components from a remote Terminal Services Client onto a Windows 2000 Terminal Server is unsupported. If you attempt to install Oracle9i in this manner, many database configuration tools, such as Oracle Data Migration, Oracle Database Configuration Assistant, Oracle Internet Directory Configuration Assistant, and Oracle Workflow Configuration Assistant, hang. Start all the configuration tools from the Terminal Server console and not from the Terminal Services Client. The following products and features are also not supported on Windows Terminal Servers: - Connection Manager - Oracle Fail Safe - Oracle HTTP Server powered by Apache - Oracle Migration Workbench - Oracle Names - Oracle Object Link Manager - Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server - Server Management (SRVM) Unsupported 8.1.7 Oracle Products under Windows 2000 Terminal Services ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ... Starting a Listener on Terminal Server -------------------------------------- (Bug 1458669) The LSNRCTL START command does not return a prompt and hangs when run from the Terminal Services Client. The listener service is started but is unusable. A workaround is to start the listener service by using the NET START command at the command prompt if the listener service is already created. Note that the LSNRCTL START command works when run from the Terminal Server console. Net8 Configuration Assistant hangs when trying to start the Net8 listener on Microsoft Terminal Server. If this hang occurs during installation, exit Net8 Configuration Assistant and start the listener service by using the NET START command if the listener service is already created. ... _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Oracle Support Services [http://metalink.oracle.com] Copyright (c) 1995,2000 Oracle Corporation.
