The issue is not with Crystal reports per se, ( though it is at the shallow end of the gene pool as far as reporting tools go ), but with allowing users to run ad hoc reports from a production database. It's just not a good idea. All it takes is one query by one user missing a join, and the performance hit will be measurable. Get a 2 or 3 of them doing it, and you won't need to measure it, other users will start complaining. Better to turn them loose on a database created just for reporting. I've done that with a couple of systems here. It is *not* a DW, just replicated tables. If an errant report starts causing problems in the reporting database, it is a much less critical ( and less noticable to management ) problem than bringin an ERP system to it's knees.
