Most northern Europeans speak decent English (I remember getting
information from a chap storing crates in a Norwegian supermarket), and
are quite happy to practice it; even in France or Italy communicating in
English is relatively easy in the IT environment (less so outside it).
German and Dutch share enough roots with English to make written matters
guessable. Trouble starts when you are waiting for a train on some
platform and cannot understand what comes out of loudspeakers ...
