Place reference the 8i Admin manual before starting to make sure I didn't miss anything but the steps are shown below. And as always make a cold backup if possible before making changes to the db structure.
To Add Control Files 1) Shut down the instance 2) Make a copy of one of your control files 3) Place/Name your files in the designed additional location (I.E. name them in your naming conventions and place them on the correct disks) 4) Edit your init<sid>.ora file to include the new files 5) Startup the instance It is always better to have more then two control files. But, IO contension really depends on your disk layout.
