Having archives go to an NFS mounted directory, where backup server is, is a standard trick and nothing particularly risky. A decent backup server is still a better solution. The problem is the fact that the NFS server can, quite unpredictably, go offline and then, your database is stuck. The solution is to use log_archive_dest_n parameter in conjunction with log_archive_dest_state_n parameter which a) defines state, so you can take care of the offline destinations and b) uses Oracle*Net, so that you can send archives to another node without the NFS. Cajoling NFS into using TCP is, allegedly, possible, but I've never seen it done. I even tried it unsuccessfully on 2 SUN E450 machines after reading the NFS3 specification document, but it wouldn't work.
