The last time I went to the patch download area on metalink, there was a new link to ftp://updates.oracle.com. You can't browse this server, but you can get a patch if you know the patch number and file name as ftp://updates.oracle.com/<patch_number>/<file_name>. You can get these from metalink. For instance, the Solaris 8.1.7.4 patchset is at ftp://updates.oracle.com/2376472/p2376472_8174_SOLARIS.zip
