Paul - Hopefully you will receive more helpful advice, but I have received strange errors using the COPY command and the reply I received from Oracle support was that it was being phased out and if I didn't like errors I should write a small PL/SQL program to perform this task (give you a copy if you want it). That was 5 years ago, so obviously it hasn't disappeared. I would recommend modifying your COPY statement until you get away from the error.
