thanks to all who are helping with this problem. control file(s) are missing. since this is a new install it might have been that the control files were never created. the oracle docs (support) tell to use "CREATE CONTROLFILE" statement to create control file(s). but i need to know the complete procedure. would you know the complete statement and procedure to generate control files. do we have to change the db/sid name ?
