Holiday Greetings, We use NetBackup Exec on a Novell network and the backup manual say's that it can backup open files and not hamper the operation of the system. Horse pucky. When a file is open by Oracle the tape backup "backs up the file without a lock" but if Oracle needs to use the file for read/write it finds the file in use by another and places the file in an offline mode and requires recovery to bring it back into the sanity mode. According to oracle no backup program other than their own should be used. There is no support guarantee from Oracle if the backup is taken when the database is open. St. Bernard software disagrees but I still only trust the Oracle solutions. Cold backups or hot backups or RMAN backups only. Ron
