Two related questions:

       * How are backups performed on your servers, including those
          not related to Oracle?
       * How will backups be performed for the rest of the files on
your database server, not related to Oracle?

The answers to these questions should lead toward a decision of whether you
should use OEM for scheduling backups or not.

The problem with the OEM "Backup Manager" is that it is separate and
distinct from the backup routines used everywhere else in the typical server
room. It is yet another console that must be installed and learned by
operations personnel. This is why most people use the RMAN command-line
interpreter on the server -- it can be scripted and called as such by the
same job-scheduling system used to backup the rest of the servers.

So, it is not (entirely) a Neanderthal-like desire for command-line over GUI
(except in my own personal case!). Rather, running from the command-line
allows the Oracle database backups to be integrated with all of the over
backups that occur. This "global view" of backups can only help in a crisis
situation.

Perhaps my Neanderthal-like mistrust of GUI tools has blinded me to
something obvious, but perhaps someone could describe how an OEM-scheduled
backup would integrate with a shop that is using Veritas NetBackUp or Legato
Networker to backup all other servers and files on those servers?

My advice is to consider whether using OEM fits in with your IT shop. If it
doesn't, consider using RMAN from the command-line to create scripts (Joe
Testa recently advertised the need for beta-testing for some scripts he has
developed, I believe!) that can be called by your system administrators.
