Ah! There's the rub... RMAN isn't "free" unless you are only using device-type=DISK. If you are going to use device-type=SBT-TAPE, then some media-management vendor like Veritas or Legato or whomever is going to charge you a *bundle* to integrate.
Oracle purposely did this so they would not have to write the interface to the various backup-media software utilities. It was a good idea, but the fact is that the cost comes in after the fact... That's one thing that I was looking to point out... Mind you, I'm a huge RMAN proponent (see my quote advocating physical violence to get people to migrate to RMAN on the back of the "RMAN Pocket Reference") :-), but I thought it would be useful to point these things out... ----- Original Message ----- To: "Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, January 13, 2003 5:15 PM > RMAN Does everything that SQL Backtrack does, for free. :-) > In fact, last I heard, BMC was planning on altering SQL Backtrack so that it > > is really nothing more than a nice fancy front end to RMAN.
