Another thought is that if you are starting your database without any init.ora at all (which is very possible),

then you may need to create file systems for the default file locations such as user_dump_dest, etc...

We are in the process of testing every recovery scenario we can think of using rman.  We don't use a catalog and controlfile autobackup is on which implies the spfile is automatically backed up.

So one of the scenarios was to delete the spfile and pfile. 
To recover I thought we would be able to....

(database already shutdown)
rman
rman>set DBID=1370501721  ---i tried switch this with the command immediate following
rman>connect target /
rman>startup force nomount;  ---from what I read in the documentation this should force oracle to use a 'dummy' spfile.
rman>restore spfile from autobackup;

i realize there are several other ways to handle this situation but why can't i start the database in this way?
the error i get is:

RMAN> startup force nomount;
