the only time i've had the need for a regular shutdown was when there was that lovely old solaris problem where an os clock wrapped and put junk into the controlfile (and thus made a little bit of a mess of the database) so a db had to be bounced at least once every (I think) 248 days, but other than that, i view shutting the database as wasting money...
