hi. after re-creating the password file, you have to cycle the instance for it to take effect. stop and restart the oracle service. (this will kill any connections) You are better off to login to the instance and perform the shutdown manually as opposed to just killing the service. Have you set the timeout parameter for the service?
you can manually adjust this via the oradim.exe utility D:\Oracle\Ora81\Bin\> oradim -edit -sid ORCL -timeout 300 this can also be set in the registry: HKLM\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOMEn\ORACLE_%ORACLE_SID%_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT I like a value of 300 seconds for a smaller sga, larger if you have a large SGA. You will also have to set the following parameter: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WaitToKillServiceTimeout 300000 this one is in milliseconds.
