I can only relate personal experience. Like the umpire says: I call 'em like I see 'em.
The older, slower Alphas do fine. However, it has been my private, somewhat biased opinion that Compaq, lacking the advanced technical knowledge to push the platform further, resorted to something similar to the PC speed freak (www.tomshardware.com) overclocking everything on a PC to get a screaming fast PC, but one that is less stable with shortened component life. (Remember my previous e-mail about putting too much emphasis on benchmark scores?) The newer (less than two years old) Alpha boxes we have around here have been plagued with CPU, memory, and various other component failures. Corrupted data files are a fairly common occurrence (I don't recall with SAN vendor is being used -- but that could have something to do with). It seems that the SA's are applying OS patches almost monthly. When Digital ran things, "customer support" was something like: They throw some CD's on your desk and tell you to call some guy named Bubba, and he will send you some e-mails. And their "servers" were these ugly, galvanized metal boxes shoved into a rack with these JBOD drives in plastic boxes cabled up to the galvanized boxes. And, I'm sure if I had looked around long enough, I would have found some duct tape in there too. But, at least they were stable.
