Actually I was quite fortunate that I started off as a DBA, not a developer.
I wasn't in IT at my first job. there was no IT department and IT services
were being provided by the consultants who were rolling out the systems
for us. Once the organisation grew large enough [from 15 to 50 people]
management decided to setup an IT department, calling it "Automation".
I was one of the applicants for the "internal transfer" from securities operations
to Automation. For the first 6 months or so I was actually installing PCs
as we were growing rapidly. I then went into System Admin and Oracle Admin,
having been provided initial training by the consultants and watching them
at their job ! So, I started with Oracle 5 on Xenix and MSDOS !!!
I've never been a developer !

Pat Not to be impolite, but what makes you think this is the next logical career move for you? Before you become a DBA it is good if you have a lot of other computer experience, such as development or system administration. You really need to understand how large computer systems work and how all the various pieces fit together. One step you can take is to work on Oracle Certification. This will not make you a DBA, when you don't have experience, this work will show your serious intent to learn to a prospective employer. Get a job at a site that uses Oracle, using whatever background you have. If you are a developer, get a job as a developer. If you are a system administrator, get a job as an administrator. Most of us gradually learned more and more about Oracle before getting a DBA job. I was a developer that began supporting Oracle for development activities, gradually learning DBA skills in a non-production environment.
