The ways of man (and Oracle) are mysterious and not to be questioned, I guess. If some document said "set the COMPATIBLE parameter to 9.0.2" I would bet it's a typographical error.
Good luck with your database! Let us know what happens. I've upgraded several database from 8.1.7 to 9.2.0 with no problems, if that's any consolation to you. :)

I guess this is a silly question, but could it be that Oracle didn't like the COMPATIBLE = 9.0.2 since there is no 9.0.2?
