I think it is useful to be able to split your data between different physical disks. Apart from the fact that redo and archive logs should never reside on the same volume then it can make a big difference being able to keep your data tablespaces from your indexes from your rollback from your redo.
And now I have stated the bleeding obvious. BAARF.
