some are 2.4.x things, others are 2.2.x changes.

if you aren't sure, run "sysctl -a > /tmp/foo" which basically dumps your
entire proc layout. for shmmax, the variable is kernel.shmmax,
so you'd add a line:
kernel.shmmax = ##########
then run sysctl -p
