To piggyback on John's reply, one of our 8173 test systems filled the archive destination over the weekend during a application upgrade. Now the Unix directory was fill for less than 90 minutes and the database was hung/halted for less than 45 minutes but 10s of thousands of line of the following were written to the alert log:
ARC2: Beginning to archive log# 9 seq# 160 ARC2: Failed to archive log# 9 seq# 160 ARC2: Beginning to archive log# 10 seq# 161 ARC2: Failed to archive log# 10 seq# 161 As the database spawned 9 ARCn processes and continued to attempt to write out filled redo logs. If this goes on too long you are also at risk of filling the 'background_dump_dest' directory as well.
