I've used Black Ice in the past as well Peter, and I know what you mean on that count. I now user Sygate Personal Edition, which is a LOT better at this. It won't let anything in, nor *out* without asking me if it's OK. It also holds a log of incoming and outgoing traffic, showing accepted and blocked.
Very good little firewall in my opinion, and I've used Black Ice, Zonealarm, and Symantec products in the past.
