The question was not if it's a good or bad code. The question was why? This is not the actual code that runs, just something that explains the issue :)
I've provided a selfexplanatory fix of the 'bad' code, please review it. You code uses standard.like, and a lot "isntances of booleans" -- each IF condition, same could relate to out variables (ls), and I hope you understood why the package is used.
