It's a valid concern in these times as any even vaguely negative
comment such as Mike's can be considered 'harsh' by those who see such
a forum as 'their' place to contribute. Since the 'contribution' was
poorly received instead of welcomed some tend to take it as 'harsh
criticism', which it isn't. It's unfortunate that we now must be ever
so cautious in making any but the most supportive comments since
society as a whole has dictated that we artificially boost self-esteem
in others to the point of making empty commentary simply to avoid
offending those who probably need to hear more negative feedback.
Negative doesn't mean harsh, or rude, or unfeeling, but lately ANY
comment outside of praise regardless of the delivery is ill-received.
This is the fallout of pushing people through to promotions and
responsibility when experience warns these peoople are not ready to
assume such mantles. The intent, years ago, was good and started out
on the right foot (give praise and constructive criticism, not
browbeatings to improve self-esteem) but eventually it gave way to
doing nothing but the former, eliminating the latter entirely, and
that has been a severe disservice to the recipients of such coddling.
Hopefully we'll come around again to being honest rather than
artificial and give these people what they need most, a sense of
reality delivered in a decent way.
My two cents.
