Title: Network Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL

Responsibilities

Serves as on-site company liaison with customer on administrative and
technical matters for assigned projects/products/solutions. Has
responsibility for operational quality of system equipment. Provides highly
visible customer support through the performance of on-site installation
(Major Move, Add, Change, or Delete), as well as overseeing any necessary
diagnoses, troubleshooting, service, and repair of complex equipment and
systems. Checks out and approves operational quality of system equipment.
Instructs customers in the operation and maintenance of the system.
Interprets customers' needs and clarifies if the responsibility for problem
resolution falls to sales personnel, customer support reps, or engineers.
This job may include any aspect of field support, and is not limited to
system hardware and software, PC's, and IP telephony/networking/ wireless
networking. 

 

Key Job Responsibilities

.         Maintaining, installing, training, consulting, day two support,
and documentation, of the Optical Networking, Carrier Class Routing, and
Enterprise Core/Edge Equipment and all applications installed at the
customer site.

.         Oversee the technical accuracy of advanced installations and
applications

.         Work closely with end-users in ensuring the overall satisfaction
of the customer installation

.         Provide assistance to the project management team when needed in
the design and deployment of the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise equipment

.         End-to-end Product and performance evaluation

.         Training/Supporting/Mentoring junior staff members as required

.         Assist in data collection for enterprise data implementations

.         Open Cases within Alcatel-Lucent's case tracking database,
detailing Customer's issues/questions and your associated response and
actions.

.         Resolve Customer product issues through research using appropriate
user guides, manuals, product release notes, troubleshooting guide, and
other Technical Support Engineers.

.         Troubleshoot complex telecom issues as required

.         Duplicate Customer product issue in the Customer Service Lab by
replicating the Customer product configuration across hardware and software.

.         Visit Customer site when product issue can no longer be
effectively diagnosed remotely. Site visit could include capturing more
information such as; statistics, traces, dump files, configuration files,
hardware revisions, and software revisions.

.         You will be responsible for fully understanding the configuration
capabilities of the product, generating workarounds to satisfy customer
requests, identifying and isolating the occurrence of product anomalies for
correction by R&D.

.         Interfaces with customers/managers in the presentation,
interpretation and resolution of technical matters; will be involved in the
resolution of highly complex technical problems during various phases of a
project (staging, pre-cutover, implementation, cut-over).

.         Manage all Technical Issues within the CRM Tool (Siebel)

.         Obtaining and Maintaining Product Knowledge and Expertise

.         To follow all escalations from inception to closure this may
involve interfacing with the Business Partner, Level III Technical Support,
R&D, and/or Pre-Sales.

.         Performs other duties as required.   

 

Skills and Experience


General

.         Strong knowledge in complex converged IP environments

.         VoIP troubleshooting (QoS, VLAN Mgmt, DiffServ, etc.)

.         Background in provisioning and maintenance (debug/diagnostics) of
Enterprise switching/routing equipment


Voice Experience

.         H.323 Protocols

.         VoIP troubleshooting (LAN/WAN Layer)

.         Experience (3-5 years) in Enterprise switch/router installations 

.         Working knowledge and troubleshooting experience in T1 Technology

.         Working knowledge of Telco test gear such as Fireberd testers,
Sunrise, etc.

.         Ability to debug hardware and software system level problems in a
multi-vendor IP environment

.         Typical Carrier rules, regulations and service procedures

 

Operating Systems

.         Familiarity with UNIX (Linux, HP-UX, Solaris, Aix, etc.) and
Microsoft Operating Systems (NT/XP) and software tools such as FTP, Telnet,
TFTP, HyperTerminal, etc

.         Understanding of internetworking concepts-including switching, and
routing

.         Packet voice experience with Voice over Frame-Relay and/or VoIP
(H.323/SIP/QoS mechanics)

.         Understanding of LAN/WAN protocols and topologies; for example,
TCP/IP, Frame Relay, X.25, PPP, ISDN, Ethernet

.         Knowledge in voice communications technology terms


 

Work Hours/other                                                         

.         24/7 Availability

.         Normal working hours are 8:00 AM EST to 5:00 PM EST Monday through
Friday

.         After hours coverage shall be covered via on-call rotation among
the Resident Engineering staff

.         Resident Engineers shall be trained & certified on Alcatel-Lucent
technology

.         Participate in Installation activity, as required

.         Dedicated to end-client to secure Operations and Maintenance
activities 

.         The Resident Engineer shall work flextime from Monday to Friday
(i.e., not necessarily regular business hours) to average, on a weekly
basis, not less than forty (40) hours per week.
