NOTES from call with manager: Architectural design of enterprise systems; data centers and global services architecture; no hands-on or configuration involved in the position. Need strong LINUX, Windows and cloud deployment experience SOA experience Must be forward thinking from systems standpoint and very strong design experience. Cloud (Azure or AWS) is a big plus. Prefer consultant to sit in Babylon, NY that is where the majority of the development and operations people are location, but will consider Riverwoods. They will review people over the rate but they made no promises; they were told the rate is a big challenge. Experience: Minimum 5 years experience as a Systems Engineer producing systems design specifications for Linux and Windows based platforms. Minimum 2 years writing scripts for automating builds and deployments (e.g. ANT).• Minimum 2 years hands on experience with automation toolset. e.g. Puppet, Chef, CA, etc. Minimum 2 years designing and implementing Cloud (Azure and/or AWS) based systems, including use of advanced Cloud services (e.g. load balancing, gateways, networking). Minimum 1 year experience with logging technologies (e.g. Splunk).• Programming background in one or more of the following: C , C#, Java, Perl, Python, HTML5 Fluent spoken and written English Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications: Microsoft (MCITP, MCSE) and VMWare certifications desirable. Working knowledge of GIT or comparable revision/source code management systems. Working in ticket-drive workflow environments, e.g. Jira, Mantis, Service Desk Plus, HP OpenView, etc. Experience with wiki-based and document-based collaboration and common toolsets, like Confluence and SharePoint. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Position requires some travel. This is expected to be no more than 15% of total days worked. BASIC FUNCTION This is a hands on technical position requiring extensive and demonstrable experience in producing detailed technical systems designs, implementation planning and execution for the deployment and operations of large-scale, distributed applications and solutions across a global infrastructure. This position establishes the technical deployment solutions for all applications and associated support systems, software and infrastructure within GPO Platform Technologies. The global environment includes Windows and Linux operating systems; physical and virtual server technologies; hosting in datacenters and various cloud service providers and use of their various service offerings; supporting a range of desktop and mobile applications;. The use of service-oriented technologies and solutions is at the center of world-wide customer-facing, product platform. This position will leverage his/her significant background as a Systems Engineer to set standards for systems designs, establish best practices and drive systems engineering capabilities into GPO projects and programs. The position will work closely with application architects, designers and operational staff to ensure all products and services are implemented for optimum operational efficiency and in accordance with Platform Technologies systems standards and practices. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Develops detailed technical deployment specifications and implementation plans for GPO applications, services, and platforms to optimize performance, scalability, maintainability and cost, while ensuring compatibility and conformance to GPO’s overall platform strategy. As a member of development project teams, establishes technical systems specifications that meet technical and business requirements to ensure optimal performance and availability. Produces asset inventories and application configuration details for each project/solution to ensure proper operation in operational environments of all application and platform components, including 3rd party systems and applications. Provides technical operations requirements (e.g. logging, supported technologies) to projects development teams to ensure conformance to GPO systems standards and guidelines and provide consistency to maximize efficiencies across all GPO assets which enable efficiencies in operational support and maintenance activities. Contributes to the planning and systems engineering to implement a 0% downtime strategy for deployments of all GPO supported applications and platforms to enable business continuity. Reviews GPO designs/configurations and specifies changes and improvements to improve supportability, scalability, and reliability. Collaborates and implements automation of deployments and other operational aspects to achieve continuous integration within all projects to streamline the project process. Creates maintenance guides in collaboration with operational team members to ensure effective and proactive ongoing management of environments and all applications and services running on these. Participates in analysis and evaluation projects with exploratory technologies, proofs of concept, research & development, and innovation projects, working with development and research teams and vendors, with the objective of providing preliminary systems design patterns, and assessing impact and integration within the GPO’s platform environments. Provides technical assessment and recommendations on emerging datacenter and cloud services to improve performance, reliability or other benefits. Develops the systems designs and leads the implementation of disaster recovery and high availability capabilities for GPO supported applications and platforms. Develops systems related systems conventions/best practices (e.g. allocation of memory to JVM’s) and standards (e.g. use of SQL vs. other DB technologies) to enable consistency in delivered solutions and streamlining of operational maintenance. Analyzes performance, reliability and business continuity needs and develops systems designs that address these requirements/criteria in collaboration with the Operations team for implementation. Participates and represents the PT-SysOps team on Cross Team Design, PT Architecture, Global Atlas Design, Architecture Forum and other inter-team meetings, and disseminates pertinent information to the PT-SysOps team. OTHER DUTIES Position will require working some evening, weekend and holiday hours. This may be required for troubleshooting pre-production or production issues, or to meet certain project/program objectives and milestones.
