The client is seeking the following experience for the Oracle DBA. Hope this helps. Oracle 11g, SAN, UNIX (prefer Solaris) *Role: SR.Oracle DBA Location: Reston, VA 5 month contract + possible extension of 1 year* *Local candidates preferred.* This particular role is primarily Oracle, so a candidate with mostly Oracle experience and some SQL server would be appropriate. Production systems are mostly Oracle 9i with some 10G and will be moving at some point to all 10G. Strong DBA with SAN experience. The primary responsibilities for this position are the management of the development, QA, and production database environments, ensuring that the production databases are highly available, recoverable, tuned for optimal performance and are technologically current. Secondarily this position is responsible for the development and maintenance of the logical data model and the physical data schema for College Board products and services. At all times, the DBA must be prepared to troubleshoot and resolve problems within the production operating environments. These responsibilities are fulfilled through careful organization and execution of day-to-day and strategic activities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES • Plan, install, configure and maintain the production, test and development database environments • Production Database Monitoring: o Establish alert thresholds for critical resources (eg, disk utilization) and benchmarks for normal system performance (eg, response time). o Develop procedures and utilities for monitoring and evaluating critical resources and system performance. o Monitor and evaluate critical system resources and system performance against established benchmarks. • Anticipate common database problems and take action to prevent their occurrence (e.g. storage utilization). • Design and implement industry best practices / procedures for security, recoverability and reliability. • Tune and validate RDBMSs. • Work closely with the SW Engineering staffs as needed to troubleshoot and maintain production databases and to resolve production outages. • Contribute to the development of technical design decisions involving the database. • Develop and maintain documentation including both configuration specifics and procedures. • Communicate complex technical information in a timely, concise and coherent manner. • Coordinate activities with third-party technology vendors and internal staff. • Maintain an in depth understanding of industry trends and evolving technology. • Support the development of strategic plans for the continuous improvement of the database systems. • Represents The College Board and its products in public forums, inter-company meetings, and industry conferences. PRINCIPAL RELATIONSHIPS Internal Contacts: Maintains regular contacts with staff in own department with the purpose of coordinating activities and scheduling and collaborating to produce work. Participate in supervising staff, consultants, and vendors and contributes to decisions regarding selection or evaluation. Maintains involvement in group projects that interface with other business units and customers. External Contacts: Maintains significant contacts with members, customers, and vendors and other business-related outside parties. These contacts have an impact on the image, reputation and/or business or operational well being of The College Board. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education/ Experience: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science preferred. Professional training and/or certification using SQL Server and Oracle tools and technologies desired. Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience, including several years of working with software developers to define and deliver production applications. Related Skills & Other Requirements: 3+ years of experience managing production SQL Server and Oracle relational database management systems Proficiency with SQL; especially with optimizing queries Proficiency with relational database management system performance tuning, backup and recovery Proficiency with Unix (preferably Solaris) and Windows NT Financial experience a plus (Lawson preferred) Proficiency with Shell scripting (perl, ksh, csh, etc.) Knowledge of advanced data storage technologies Experience in logical database modeling and physical database design Knowledge of scalable data architectures Willingness/ability to work off-shifts (evening, night-time, weekend) Strong customer service orientation Effective verbal and written communication skills Ability to multi-task.
