Information Systems Engineer
Location:
Palo Alto, CA
Duration: 6 months
Job duties include the installation and upgrade of hardware and software,
including interaction with IT staff and vendors involving complex testing and
troubleshooting issues. You will provide training and document standards and
operating procedures. This job also provides input to the strategic and
tactical budgeting process, performs process improvements and establishes and
leads projects.

Job Functions:
·
Responsible for the design, development, implementation, analysis,
functionality and day to day support of Client’s AIX, Solaris and Linux
infrastructure
o
Supports business critical applications such as DB2, Oracle, DNS and FTP
services
o
Shared responsibility for EPRI’s IBM SAN/SVC and IBM NAS environments
·
Primary responsibility for the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) backup and recovery
environment utilized for UNIX and Windows-based systems and Database backups
(including DB2, MS Exchange Server and SQL Server)
o
Position maintains the TSM backup infrastructure, including capacity management
o
Responsible for the introduction of new technologies and practices that improve
the integrity of data and the ability to recover systems
·
Responsible for security administration, including Tripwire file integrity
monitoring
·
Install, configure, upgrade, troubleshoot and optimize IBM Power Systems
(pSeries) LPARs and AIX administration
·
Develop partnerships with Engineering, Operations and Application Development
groups
·
Work with Database Administrators, Programmers, Analysts, Engineering, Business
Continuity and Operations staff to ensure that effective data security,
integrity, monitoring and recoverability procedures are in place at all times
·
Conduct analysis, design, evaluation, modification, testing and implementation
of enterprise-wide UNIX systems and server backup systems, including the
application of patches and system upgrades
·
Develop test plans and protocols for evaluation of system performance
·
Present project status, issues and other key information to management, peers
and stakeholders
·
Provide effective communication at all levels of management, peers and customers
·
Assist with staff training and mentoring
·
Develop conversion and system implementation plans
·
Prepare and obtain approval for system documentation that adheres to corporate
standards and Change Management policies
·
Recommend changes in long-term system design and standards
·
Coordinate system upgrade activity
·
Provide UNIX support to other groups within IT
·
Interaction is generally within the IT team, but can extend to individuals
within the Institute as well as outside vendors
Required Skills and Experience:
·
8+ years UNIX Systems Administration
·
5+ years UNIX server tuning and optimizations/troubleshooting
·
Experience installing, configuring, and upgrading AIX v5.2, v5.3
·
Experience with IBM Power5/Power6 server hardware and HMC management server
·
Experience with IBM hardware virtualization – VIOS / VIOC
·
Experience with Network Installation Manager (NIM) for installation and
maintenance of AIX LPAR’s
·
Experience with IBM DS4000/5000 series storage
·
Experience with McData/Brocade Fibre Channel switches
·
Experience with LUN masking/zoning
·
Experience with IBM 3500 series tape library or similar
·
Experience with IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC)
·
Experience with NAS devices (IBM and Data Domain)
·
Experience with Solaris 9 and Sun Microsystems Ultra Enterprise and SunFire
hardware
·
Debian GNU/Linux experience, familiarity with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x a
plus
·
Significant administration experience with TSM version 5.4.2 or higher
·
Experience supporting Enterprise Databases (DB2 Universal Database (UDB) and
Oracle) on a UNIX platform
·
High Availability Cluster Multi-Processing (HACMP) experience is a plus
·
General Parallel File System (GPFS) experience is a plus
·
Strong Korn shell scripting skills required; Perl and Bash scripting skills is
a plus
·
Additional skills required:

Experience working in a multi-site environment
o
Experience managing support / maintenance contracts
o
Excellent conceptual, analytical, verbal and written communication skills
o
Ability to work independently or on a team in a fast paced, dynamic environment
o
Ability to write detailed documentation and adhere to corporate standards /

Willingness to work evenings and weekends
o
Oversee monitoring and design of tools to effectively manage the environment
o
Serve as focal point for Applications Development/Infrastructure teams for
developing, configuring, deploying and troubleshooting
o
Produce project plans and progress reports for management
o
Follow rigorous system development life cycle (SDLC) and project management
best practices, comply with internal Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and other compliance
related processes and adhere to Change Control and Problem Management procedures
o
Candidate must have excellent time management and customer service skills
o
Conceptual knowledge of how IP, TCP, UDP and NFS work and network aspects of
system tuning is desirable
o
24/7 availability for emergency after hours response is required
Education Level and Years of Experience:

BA / BS or equivalent experience
·
8+ years of related experience
o
AIX certification a plus
o
TSM certification a plus
o
IBM SAN certification a plus
