Position:* DB2 LUW DBA/DB2 DBA - LUW* Duration:* 6 Months+* Location*: Chicago, IL* * * *Job Description: * · Functions as a DBA supporting custom applications developed using IBM’s DB2 UDB database management system in the AIX, LINUX and WINDOWS environments. · In accordance with team standards, is responsible for physical database design, creation and maintenance of database objects, data management and performance tuning. · Supports the application development teams by advising on proper database access techniques and SQL coding standards. Reviews SQL statements prior to implementation and suggests changes as required to improve the performance of the application. · Functions in an advisory capacity on database-related matters to Data Services management, Project management and the database team. Provides input to the database team on decisions regarding database management practices and SQL coding standards. · Leads or participates in internal projects and process improvement efforts sponsored by the Data Services group or the DB2 Database team. · These efforts may involve DASD management, database software upgrades, data replication and/or database tool development. · Participates in on-call support of production database systems. *Job Responsibilities:* · Serves as a strong technical resource to Systems management, project managers, data administrators, other DBA’s and programmers. Where available, is industry certified in primary DBMS. Advises on the appropriate application of database technology to systems development. · For primary DBMS, is able to performing all standard, and several complex DBA functions like: partition table space management, performance tuning, physical database design, data replication management, logical database design, complex recovery management, SQL coding and optimization techniques, etc. For open systems DBMS’s, liaises with database software vendors on issues such as software upgrades, fixes and patches necessary for the software. Downloads same, and applies using good judgment. · Is fully cognizant of a project lifecycle and where DBA services fit in. Looks for and champion’s opportunities for cost effective process improvements within the database group. Looks for ways to guide application development project teams to better deploy or use database tools. · Understands advanced physical database design concepts like database partitioning, de-normalization, buffer pool tuning, and index optimization. Has a solid knowledge of relational theory and understands the benefits and purposes of “3rd normal form” and star schemas. · Analyzes database performance, modifying DBMS parameters to improve throughput and effectively utilize system resources. Monitors database resource usage, making required adjustments. · With administrative direction and assistance from management, leads the evaluation and selection of database support tools. Sets up product demos, and objectively evaluates tools. Coordinates the collection of feedback from other evaluators. Summarizes the input, makes cost conscience tool recommendations. Writes up the body of the AFE. May be responsible for the effective deployment of tools in the group. Sets up training classes and may function as a tool administrator, working with the vendor, internally coordinating product upgrades and fixes.
