*1.         **Summary Role Description*

The Application Architect is accountable for the quality and cohesion of
application architecture components within a domain, their conformance to
approved standards, and alignment with target (future-state) enterprise and
domain architecture goals.  This includes management of domain specific
application architecture initiatives both in terms of evolving the
architecture and ensuring compliance to GM architectural standards.  Looks
across the applications used to support the domain to ensure that the
architecture of these applications supports the business vision and goals
while remaining in compliance with GM standards.  Ensures appropriate and
effective data integration across the applications within the domain and
works to ensure adequate integration across domains where appropriate.  The
application architect is responsible for ensuring that specific solutions
conform to the approved architectural direction of the domain.  The
application architect shows leadership in assisting other project
architects from either AD (application development) or ADS (application
development and sustain) suppliers to architect solutions in accordance
with approved domain architectural direction.

*2.         **Education*

Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline required.  Master’s degree
(technical discipline) preferred.

*3.         **Major Duties and Responsibilities *

a.         Responsible for actively managing the evaluation, selection, and
application of architecture components to create an integrated portfolio of
domain-specific applications which deliver maximum business value in line
with enterprise strategy and standards.

b.         Responsible for definition and documentation of the current
state application architecture in an organized and cohesive manner using
industry accepted frameworks.

c.          Responsible for development and documentation of future state
application architecture based on domain-specific business direction,
requirements and anticipated capabilities.

d.         Reviews, evaluates and actively contributes to domain solutions
from an application architecture perspective.  The application architect
conducts these reviews in a timely manner in order to support project
timing requirements while balancing the need for architectural conformance
with business needs.  The application architect assists, consults and
otherwise insures that the project architects design/architect within
domain guidelines to meet their project requirements.

e.         Responsible for developing and communicating an application
architecture roadmap illustrating the necessary transition architectures
and portfolio activity required to bridge from the current state to the
defined future state.

f.          Responsible for communicating domain architecture principles to
solution (project) architects  providing guidance and mentoring to affect
project conformance to those principles, and evaluating solution
architectures for conformance  to principles and standards.

g.         Responsible for integration and cohesion of inter-domain
application architecture components.

h.         Responsible for the scalability, maintainability, reliability,
extensibility and usability of the end solution designs.

i.           Responsible for communicating domain application architecture
requirements with enterprise-wide applicability to the enterprise.

j.           Responsible for providing on-demand expertise to project
rescue missions or production system incidents where application
architecture is indicated as a potential root cause for the issue at hand.

k.         Responsible for applying relevant enterprise and domain
information technology architecture components and standards (business,
application, information, technology and security) to a specific technology
solution (project).

l.           Responsible for packaging and publishing reusable architecture
building blocks to enterprise architecture repository.

m.       Contributes to the development of domain specific architectural
roadmaps considering the requirements and needs of various solution
components.

n.         Success in this role will be measured by the demonstrated
ability to drive innovation and business transformation through development
and implementation of information technology solutions that utilize GM
specified standards and industry accepted best practices to create or
augment GM’s competitive advantage.

o.         Success in this role will also be measured by demonstrated
ability to drive business value and technical innovation through selection
and implementation of industry leading application architecture
technologies while conforming to GM architectural standards and policies.

*4.         **Qualifications*

Architecture Skills:

a.         Broad experience based understanding of the principles of
application architecture, including the distinction between contextual,
conceptual, logical, and physical layers and the distinction and
dependencies between business, information, systems, and technology.

b.         Proven experience based ability to define and implement
effective application architectures in large-scale multi-national
organizations.

c.          Ability to evaluate applications architectures to ensure
appropriate use of technology components and standards while ensuring that
the solution design provides adequate scalability, robustness, fault
tolerance and redundancy, capacity and maintainability.

d.         Ability to illustrate abstract models using concrete examples,
and create views into architecture that reflect the viewpoint of different
consumers of that architecture.

e.         Ability to conduct fact-based evaluations of architecture
alternatives, mediate opposing viewpoints and negotiate equitable outcomes
that ensure stable solutions.

f.          Practical experience with enterprise architecture support tools
(e.g., Orbus, Troux, System Architect) or MS-Office toolset (Visio, Excel,
Word) as applied to application architecture deliverables.

g.         Practical application of TOGAF or equivalent framework/method in
establishing, governing, and executing domain-level application
architecture work.

a.

Technical Skills:

a.         Ability to apply a broad understanding of industry accepted
information technologies - including application development technology,
database technology, infrastructure technology – to architecture
development and decision making processes concerning their introduction,
use, and retirement within a domain.

b.         Ability to comprehend, evaluate, and select from application
architecture alternatives against principles, policy, risk, and cost, and
communicate the decision, the rationale behind the decision, and the
implications of the decision to both enterprise and projects.

c.          Ability to identify and appropriately apply current information
technologies across multiple projects and platforms driving business
focused results.

d.         Proven experience based ability to technically evaluate, assess
and recommend remediation of technical application architectures and
applications in a crisis management situation.  Proven ability to diagnose
and remediate large scale multi-tiered application systems, including the
underlying infrastructure is essential.

e.         Understands and can apply software engineering and application
development methodologies in a complex multi-project environment.

*5.         **Experience*

a.         Minimum 8-10 years experience in information systems
architecture development and deployment.

b.         Demonstrated hands-on experience with successful development and
deployment of cross-system or domain level application architectures using
current information technology frameworks, standards and practices.

c.          Demonstrated experience in successfully translating business
strategy, objectives, and future-state capabilities into application
architecture requirements while maintaining traceability between them
through deployment and benefits realization.

d.         Career track record of engineering, developing (coding),
deploying, and maintaining business critical systems across a range of
technologies and using a range of development patterns, methods, and
languages including a minimum of 5 years of hands-on coding and development
experience.

e.         Demonstrated experience in developing contextual and conceptual
architecture deliverables at a domain level – not just technical solution
architecture deliverables.

f.          Demonstrated experience in successfully engaging IT leadership
in defining and elaborating application architecture requirements.

g.         Experience engineering and delivering systems in at least one of
the following business domain areas:  supply chain and logistics,
automotive product engineering, automotive manufacturing and assembly,
automotive sales and service, finance management, HR or corporate staffs.
