Also do you have to have a partition for this to work, or will it do this for 
you if you have un partitioned space on the drive.

Knoppix offers a solution to do this.

The Oralux CD can be copied for example to the hard disk at boot time,
using the "tohd" cheatcode. Then, the CD is no more necessary and can
be ejected.

The cheatcode is for example:
knoppix tohd=/dev/hda1

At next boot, the CD will start the copied file using:
knoppix fromhd=/dev/hda1
