Κυρίες και κύριοι, Από το βράδυ της Δευτέρας συγκλονίζει την οικογένεια των τυφλών η δυσάρεστη είδηση του απρόσμενου, ξαφνικού θανάτου της Μαρίας Κυριάκου, δασκάλας τυφλών και μέλους της Οργάνωσης μας για τρεις σχεδόν δεκαετίες. Το 2008 εκλέγηκε στη θέση της Αντιπροέδρου της Παγκύπριας Οργάνωσης Τυφλών, ενώ ταυτόχρονα κατείχε τη θέση της Προέδρου της Επιτροπής Γυναικώντης ΠΟΤ. Το 2010 ανέλαβε την προεδρία της Επιτροπής γυναικών της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης τυφλών και στη συνέχεα το συντονισμό της Επιτροπής διαφορετικότητας της Ένωσης. Τα τελευταία δέκα σχεδόν χρόνια η Μαρία είναι Γενική Γραμματέας της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης τυφλών και τιμά επάξια τη χώρα και την οργάνωση μας διεθνώς με τον επαγγελματισμό, την υπευθυνότητα και την τεχνογνωσία που διαθέτει καθώς και με τον υπέρμετρο ζήλο που επιδεικνύει στην επιτέλεση του σημαντικού αυτού ρόλου. Η είδηση του θανάτου της έκανε ήδη το γύρω του κόσμου και δεκάδες συνάδελφοι Πρόεδροι των εθνικών οργανώσεων τυφλών και σημαντικά στελέχη οργανώσεων των ατόμων με αναπηρίες που τη γνώρισαν ή συνεργάστηκαν με τη Μαρία δηλώνουν Σοκαρισμένοι. Παραθέτουμε πιο κάτω ενδεικτικά ορισμένα από τα δεκάδες ηλεκτρονικά μηνύματα συλλυπητηρίων που έλαβε η Οργάνωση μας από τους πολλούς φίλους και στενούς συνεργάτες στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση Τυφλών, μέχρι τις 11 σήμερα πριν το μεσημέρι, τα οποία μιλούν από μόνα τους: Ο Πρόεδρος της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης τυφλών έγραψε: Dear Christakis, I am deeply shocked by this terrible news.
