Attribute in no namespace that you use on XForms elements must be XForms attributes. If you want to add your own attributes, you need to put them in your own namespace (e.g. xhtml:class="..."). One reason for this is that without this restriction, you could run in situations where you misspell an attribute and don't get any validation error because the engine thinks it is "your own attribute" instead of an error. By using your own namespace you make it clear that those are not XForms attributes.

I was unable to reproduce that. Could you send a screenshot and the text that appears in the tooltip when hovering the cursor over the icon?
3. Why does the the studio xml editor not diagnose style as unexpected?
At this point Studio does not validate XForms controls inside XHTML. It does however validate the content of your XForms model.
