Many thanks for the tip-off, the application works using the
'foreign-nodes' elements approach, but I still can't get it to work
using the HTML namespace approach. If anyone else has successfully
embedded the HTML namespace into their custom doctypes, please mail me!

Nic,

In W3C Schema, if you declare an element or a group in a schema with a

targetNamespace, you need to use the corresponding prefix when you 
reference that element or group. So in your schema, you need to 
replace all your ref="gaga" by ref=" ljf:gaga".
