Adam,

Orbeon is suitable for such tasks. You just have to realize that it does not pretend to be a full-fledged business process execution engine. For that purpose, a BPEL engine is more appropriate. We intend to integrate with such engine as soon as a satisfying open source BPEL engine is available.

XPL, the XML pipeline definition language implemented by Orbeon, allows you to execute sequences of operations, and more, since XPL supports conditonals and loops as well. As you point out, it is currently more geared towards user interfaces, but it is not a requirement to use it in such a way. You can run pipelines from the command-line or embed them in other applications. Presentation Server also comes with a scheduler that allows you to run pipelines in the background.

You currently have to write pipelines by hand in the XPL language.

We currently have a BIE (Business Integreation Engine) installation, only the
product is VERY flakey and difficult work with. We use this to process
'automated' jobs where data is loading into a database from a flat file, or read
from a database (into XML) and transformed in some way, etc...

Is Orbeon suitable to such tasks? It looks like a very impressive product but
most of the examples are oriented towards interactive events, and ours are
primarily just chains of actions. Is there a process/flow/route (whatever you
call them) designer/builder or do the events have to be coded by hand [in your
XML dialect]?
