I'm still having to set up the kopts for this to work, rather than specifying in the preseed on 12.04.

If, however, you pass netcfg/choose_interface=eth0 to the kernel as a boot option - it works as expected and does not display a menu option for this value. In a room full of headless machines being booted by cobbler, displaying menus is bad, as is not having those machines be able to find dhcp.
