One way to greatly reduce the mess from soaking and washing coir is to use a pillowcase. Hopefully one you dont plan on using for anything else.

What I do:
Drop the brick of coir in a pail of water and soak over night.
Pour everything into a pillowcase. Smash up the brick in the pillowcase, firsts with some pounding of a mallet of similar blunt object, and then I break up the smaller pieces with my hand. Take the pillowcase with the coir still inside and soak in a pail of water for a day, change water in pail, repeat until the soaked coir leaves the water clear. You can run water through the pillowcase of coir, but I dont have the time to stand there and do that. You can check the conductivity of the final clear water to see if it meets your needs. Hang the pillowcase and let the coir dry somewhat. Use coir for potting or transfer to another container. Dry out pillowcase, and use again next time. No need to wash.
