Someone contacted me off list wondering about gorilla hair. Here are 2 pictures. One is what the stuff looks like straight out of the bag- its common garden bed mulch, blows around in the wind, ticks off your neighbors. *G* the other is what it looks like in a pot.

Martin, thanks for the link to Wellenstein's roots. I had paphs in coir which I neglected terribly and yet they still had decent roots, again I can only assume because of coir's ability to hold water longer. Too bad you have to rinse the living daylights out of it in order to make it useable. Something I'd try once, then avoid like the plague. I'm a lazy person.

Dennis, very true about proper potting/air exchange/moisture etc. I wondered more about plants that seem to bloom when they get to the edge of the pot, or the plant blooms on the bulbs that are against the edge of the pot rather on the side with more room (Like with Lyc aromatica). Cramped roots = blooms (???) Hence my question. Myth or fact. It would be nice it cramping them was the answer. Alas, it seems proper husbandry is. Dang it.
