Never let the facts get in the way of a good story Iris! AOS supports Selby
in many ways over many years. Fact. $25 for an orchid ID, a bargain in
anyone's language. The public have no idea of the effort that must be
expended on some complex species identifications and if this is partially
balanced by the straightforward ones, the process is still an under priced
and maybe underappreciated treasure. If the present chaos in taxonomy
continues then we will need Selby's services even more in the future.
Dear Andy et al,
yes ... everyone expects taxonomists to cater to the orchid community for free.. I know that part of the story for 28 years now. But , wait until a taxonomist asks for some slides or pictures of whatever. Then everything has "its price".
I think 25 US for a orchid identification is still peanuts. Especially in view of what a number of irrational people have done to Selby, they should put that fee up to 250 US.
about Taxonomy chaos. Andy, you don't even know how correct you are ... I have just discovered another case that will make all your ears tingle when it it published ... start getting out those virgin tags and that pencil. And what did I say a few years ago in Philadelphia ... 60 percent of the hybrids are not what "people" say they are .... I think I was on the low side with my count in respect to certain genera. And that, of course means that plenty of awards ..... I was severely scolded for that talk .... and the AOS judges even had a special meeting because of it ... tada tada ... I just love it.
