Dear Steve et al, as your "beloved Guido" I could most certainly help with identifications, however, I am not on the certified taxonomists list of the AOS. They require 2 peer review articles on taxonomy (I believe). They threw me off the list when that rule was made. Although I have several peer review articles per year (Richardiana is peer review, Schlechteriana was peer review), and they asked me to write for "Orchids" (peer review?), I have hitherto refused to apply to put me back on the list. (Everyone knows my view on "peer review." If the AOS wants me on the list of "accredited taxonomists," they can put me on, if not, they should leave it. (I copied this message to Lee Cooke ... he can act as he pleases, and if anyone of you thinks I should be on that list, you can send Lee an e-mail regarding this matter)
As for a fee ... I have stated before that in my opinions, a fee is more than warranted (although I have never taken one [stupid me]). I doubt that anyone on the list goes to work and refuses his monthly paycheck. Why should taxonomists work without renumeration (In my case, my wife pays for it)?

The charges for orchid ID that I heard being discussed were related to the Orchid ID center at Selby. However, Selby has no monopoly on orchid identification. The AOS currently lists 25 taxonomic authorities who are willing and are certified for identifying orchids for AOS awards. Only 3 of these are at Selby. The decisions of any of the others will be sufficient for an award certification and few if any of them will request a $25 fee. Of course, if you want to get an orchid ID for some reason other than an AOS award (perhaps you're curious), there are many more taxonomists who can be consulted, including our beloved Guido.
