Anyone tried the new synthetic foam corks for growing orchids? After reading an article in the Wall Street Journal, I contacted a manufacturer of plastic foam wine corks, and mentioned some evil plans for their product. They were happy to send me a large box of synthetic corks at no charge (bad print run or something). I've only tried one plant, but it doesn't seem to hurt it. It's not growing much right now. The corks have good density, but very low water absorption. I suppose they'd last for almost forever. The one problem is that they are very difficult to cut; without reducing them in a mechanical grinder, you're stick with pretty much one size! If anyone is interested, I think I still have some at work if you'd like to experiment with the balance of the corks I received.
