Is it true in the USA Native Americans (a.k.a. Indians) have the right to collect rare and/or endangered orchids as was shown in the movie 3ADAPTATIONS2 (Patterned after Susan Orleans9 book 3The Orchid Thief2)? Or was that purely fiction?
If it is true, do similar laws pertain in any other countries? (New Guinea, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Madagascar, etc.)? Are there nations that do not subscribe to CITES? If so, which ones? And if so, could a wild orchid from such a country be legally imported into the USA? I am serious about this because I am starting series of articles about Conservation of Orchids and the CITES Controversy for our monthly Lafayette Orchid Society Newsletter. At some point, common sense, logic, and the demands of reality must prevail. I think we are seeing a system in its adolescence going through its 3growing pains.2 Thanks to all who are knowledgeable and can cast some serious and informed light on these questions. My best to all, and a hearty thanks to all the people who wrote nice e-mails to me after my recent introductory background statement A wonderful welcome into the fold.
